SITE VISIT
Learning from Local Leaders: Sustainable Agriculture
In August 2023, members of our Board of Directors, Shariah Committee and Executive Committee participated in a site visit to
SEAD Build, a social enterprise-managed bamboo plantation in Ipoh, Perak. This firsthand experience provided key insights into:
Sustainable Agriculture Practices: We witnessed how sustainable farming methods can significantly benefit the environment,
particularly through carbon sequestration, the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Social Impact in Action: We learned how the bamboo plantation integrates social impact by creating employment opportunities to
empower low-income women members of the local Orang Asal community, while contributing to a sustainable future.
Building on this experience, we are thrilled to collaborate with SEAD Build to promote biochar – a charcoal product made from
bamboo that enhances soil health and stores carbon. This aligns perfectly with our commitment to environmental (E) and social (S)
impact. The growing importance of bamboo was highlighted in Parliament in 2023, further underlining the potential of this exciting
venture.
